Hi. So we will end up visiting end of October. (In 3 days). It looks like weather is getting pretty bad. How do I check if it’s bad enough to cancel or not?
Hi Vj, I spoke to a friend in Fairbanks today, actually. Today was absolutely wild, everything had to be cancelled due to the rain followed by 8″ of snow and frozen temps. Lots of power outages. One resource I recommend is the DOT. You can call them: (907) 451-2210.
Are you coming from out of state? It looks to me as though temps are nice and cold, back to to normal again, by 10/25. This means roads will be sticky (safer), and not slick, hopefully! But again, check with the DOT because conditions could still be compromised due to ice on trees and downed power lines.
I also like to look at this map for concerns regarding road conditions: https://511.alaska.gov/map. Otherwise, I would certainly go for it if DOT says things are safe. If your trip was yesterday and today I would have said otherwise. Also worth noting is that the Northern Lights forecast looks a bit slim for the rest of the week.
