My experience in Southcentral, Alaska
I have been traveling to the Southcentral region of Alaska for close to twenty years! While I have spent a decent amount of time in Anchorage, the wilderness areas surrounding it have my heart.
One of my favorite places in the world is Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in the eastern part of the southcentral region. We have a cabin bordering the park in McCarthy, Alaska, that we stay at for a month at a time every couple of summers.
From amazing restaurants, world-class skiing, fly-in backcountry trips, flightseeing, glaciers, cool history, and epic hikes, this region has it all!
Talkeetna was one of the first funky towns (after McCarthy) that I visited in Alaska after moving to Fairbanks and I love it there! It’s a great place to stop if you are making the drive from Anchorage to Fairbanks or Denali.
In addition, I highly recommend exploring the Prince William Sound area. Try taking the ferry from Whittier to Valdez for a unique method of traveling that comes with stunning views.
